17 may 2013, 9.09pm - wood lathe

i went to the workshop wanting to make a block of wood into sphere.
thought there was some automated machine that can do this, but no.

technician helped to prep the cube for the lathe, which spins it around.
then he taught me to hold a chisel(?) against the wood to carve it into a sphere.

and i got a free mask because the wood shavings were flying everywhere.
eyes, ears, nose, mouth, all protected.

the lathe is all engine and levers, very old-school compared to the computer-aided cutters.
and standing there, trying to control the chisel as it cut into the block, was enjoyable.
almost like a mediation, because i was concentrating on going very slowly and carefully.

did you know that wood shavings smell faintly of peanut butter?

anyway, blocky is still in the lathe. have to continue on monday!
