interesting conversations of the day:
- the crash remains of the Malaysia Airlines was finally found in the South Indian Ocean.
Perth is the nearest city to it.
one theory is that the fire on board caused the pilot to head in another direction for help but the smoke killed them and the plane continued on auto-cruising until it crashed.
condolences to the family and friends of the people on board.
- when the internet was still in its early days, there were no search engines, so my colleague had to go to the news stand to buy a book that listed the URLs of website to find stuff. and it wasn't even a thick book.
then search engines came along, but Google beat them because their algorithm was so much better than the others'.
also, their simple front page was designed in that way because they didn't know HTML? ... really??
but it attracted users who didn't like the cluttered portal page common at that time.
- there is a 'dark side' of the moon and a 'far side' of the moon.
the dark side is the side we can't see, even though it's facing us, because light is not reflected off it.
but the far side is the side we will never see, because the moon rotates around the earth in such a way that one side will never face us.
D:
physics! tidal locking! omg! can't understand!
- if you play Kerbal Space Program, you will understand this rotation / tidal locking / ??? astrophysics stuff better.
this game lets you build and launch and control spacecraft in a fun but realistic (space-enivronment / physics-wise) way.
- there are a lot of GPS satellites orbiting the earth, mostly around the equator. you can get those apps that map them out for you when you point your phone at the sky.
even though there are so many, they won't crash.
why?
because space is huge!
they are all on different attitudes and whatnot.
and if you played Kerbal, and tried to crash into the debris floating in space, it won't be possible because there is so space separating you from the anything.
but, if you were trying to land on a surface or dock stuff, you will likely crash.
interesting conversation from a previous day:
- my classmate is using the ancient Chinese art of brush work for her project.
people with Chinese heritage probably learnt calligraphy before (i did) but probably know it as a strict tradition and try to imitate the beautiful style of the master.
my classmate is advocating the neglected side of brush work, which is connected to Tao and Zen and mindfulness and emotional/spiritual health, by suggesting that anyone can do it for fun if they use it to express themselves, for themselves.
her brush work is done by allowing the inspiration to flow through her, creating fluid and dynamic lines.
she showed the pieces to our supervisor and it was surprising how he could immediately pick out which ones were done when her mind and body were in spiritual harmony.
then we talked about our plans for the future. she said she was going to study nursing after this degree, and i was like WHATTTT
she said it's because she wanted to stay here but it's not likely we can find a job for the visa to do that.
then i told her to not rush into it because nursing is 3.5 years.... omg.
but yeah, both of us haven't really thought about what we can do after this course.
non- interesting conversation from a previous day:
- the 'cultured' Middle-East guy asked to meet and i foolishly agreed.
it was very awkward and i realised i can't stand the way he thinks Singapore's rules and regulations are good.
and he made me teach him more Mandarin. urgh. never again.
