31 mar 2014 - handshake

what happened to spongebob

was depressed since last Wed, because my practical project wasn't finalised and i didn't know what to do for it.
been wracking my brain at work. my poor little brain.
was stressed about meeting my photography lecturer last Fri too, because i didn't have anything decent to show her.
but meeting her was good because she said some things that stuck in my head.

why the hand?
what about the social and political realm, like paying for things?
as long as it's in a public space and you don't show their face.

then my project proposal was due for a draft showing to my supervisor on Fri but i was so sad i went to sleep.
you know when you're sad when you don't want to get out of bed even though your mind is racing.
and i sat in my chair for the whole weekend, trying to come up with something for my project.
i was desperate enough to revert to my idea from last semester. my supervisor liked them, so i thought i had to use them. which mean rotating the GoPro around my arm.
my flatmate made cupcakes. he's baking a lot, like what i did during my first semester when i had no job.
i only left my seat to get Velcro from the shops. and i came up with the crap idea of  making my hand do 40 different actions, meaning i needed to get props and costumes and locations.

today i didn't want to wake up again. still agonized over the apparatus for the camera and the crap idea of doing 40 actions.
then during class, we workshopped our classmate's draft. he wrote about phenomenology as a methodology. that was a revelation.

then after class, i went to steal some wood to make an apparatus for my GoPro at the workshop.
the apparatus went okay.
then i went to sit at the cafe because i wanted to eat my muffin.
i decided to ask to sit on the other side of this mature guy since the other benches were taken and he was alone.
then he joked about wanting half my muffin since he let me share the table.
after that we were doing our own thing, i was reading the bits on phenomenology and wracking my brain for project ideas when he asked what i did here.
we started talking and it turns out he was doing his Masters in screenwriting and he has 20 years of experience doing theater and film, mostly in Sydney. so i was describing my problem agitatedly and he told me about his fights with his supervisor and his media studies class, which kinda helped me feel less shitty.
we talked until he left to cycle home and i went to the library.
at the library, i decided to get rid of my crappy '40 actions' idea and just do 1 action, handshaking, for my project. i decided it was going to be handshaking with strangers at the cultural center.
then i worked on the project proposal for 3 hours there and left feeling a lot better.
don't know what my supervisor will say about this but hopefully he won't think it's shit and give this assignment a bad mark.

26 mar 2014 - practical!

had another meeting with my supervisor today.
boy, he really shot my idea for a outdoor photo installation down.
he reminded me again that i am too theoretical and impractical and said, in no uncertain terms, that i was going to do badly in my upcoming assignment because my practical project proposal looks like shit right now.

i got scared, but i think i finally got what he was saying.
so i googled "art project proposal". that really clarified how i should put on my 'practical' hat and write for the proposal.
google truly is the best.

also, check out the Spongebob mutant my flatmates created over 2 days.
they transformed the ordinary Spongebob i drew on the whiteboard in the flat.
it is an evolving and slightly creepy piece of community art.

25 mar 2014 - convos

from the John Curtin gallery : paramodel - paramodelic graffiti

interesting conversations of the day:

- the crash remains of the Malaysia Airlines was finally found in the South Indian Ocean.
Perth is the nearest city to it.
one theory is that the fire on board caused the pilot to head in another direction for help but the smoke killed them and the plane continued on auto-cruising until it crashed.
condolences to the family and friends of the people on board.

- when the internet was still in its early days, there were no search engines, so my colleague had to go to the news stand to buy a book that listed the URLs of website to find stuff. and it wasn't even a thick book.
then search engines came along, but Google beat them because their algorithm was so much better than the others'.
also, their simple front page was designed in that way because they didn't know HTML? ... really??
but it attracted users who didn't like the cluttered portal page common at that time.

- there is a 'dark side' of the moon and a 'far side' of the moon.
the dark side is the side we can't see, even though it's facing us, because light is not reflected off it.
but the far side is the side we will never see, because the moon rotates around the earth in such a way that one side will never face us.
D:
physics! tidal locking! omg! can't understand!

- if you play Kerbal Space Program, you will understand this rotation / tidal locking / ??? astrophysics stuff better.
this game lets you build and launch and control spacecraft in a fun but realistic (space-enivronment / physics-wise) way.

- there are a lot of GPS satellites orbiting the earth, mostly around the equator. you can get those apps that map them out for you when you point your phone at the sky.
even though there are so many, they won't crash.
why?
because space is huge!
they are all on different attitudes and whatnot.
and if you played Kerbal, and tried to crash into the debris floating in space, it won't be possible because there is so space separating you from the anything.
but, if you were trying to land on a surface or dock stuff, you will likely crash.

interesting conversation from a previous day:

- my classmate is using the ancient Chinese art of brush work for her project.
people with Chinese heritage probably learnt calligraphy before (i did) but probably know it as a strict tradition and try to imitate the beautiful style of the master.
my classmate is advocating the neglected side of brush work, which is connected to Tao and Zen and mindfulness and emotional/spiritual health, by suggesting that anyone can do it for fun if they use it to express themselves, for themselves.
her brush work is done by allowing the inspiration to flow through her, creating fluid and dynamic lines.
she showed the pieces to our supervisor and it was surprising how he could immediately pick out which ones were done when her mind and body were in spiritual harmony.

then we talked about our plans for the future. she said she was going to study nursing after this degree, and i was like WHATTTT
she said it's because she wanted to stay here but it's not likely we can find a job for the visa to do that.
then i told her to not rush into it because nursing is 3.5 years.... omg.
but yeah, both of us haven't really thought about what we can do after this course.

non- interesting conversation from a previous day:

- the 'cultured' Middle-East guy asked to meet and i foolishly agreed.
it was very awkward and i realised i can't stand the way he thinks Singapore's rules and regulations are good.
and he made me teach him more Mandarin. urgh. never again.

documentary Sunday

Native America before European Colonization
1:37:50

this documentary is hell good.
20 minutes in and my mind is blown already by how corn was created from a weedy wild grass, and how the Americas only had llamas and turkeys as domestic animals.

and 2 other good 'documentaries' i saw:

Secrets of the Sexes - Episode 3: Love (BBC)
46:10

they analysed the relationship between 4 couples - a newly married one, 2 couples in trouble, and a couple happily married for 70 years.
the old couple was so so cute :3
and according to neuroscientists, love suppresses the part of the brain that processes critical judgements and activates the feelings of exhilaration and motivation.
but that only lasts for about 2-3 years, so then maintaining relationships are like "going to work", according to the old couple.

BBC Three - Secrets of the Superbrands (Fashion)
57:46

the host is quite like me, he's not into expensive stuff, so it's fun to see him investigate why people like big brands, and how brands create loyalty.
in the episode about technology, people queued up a day in advance just to be the first to enter a new Apple store. wtf.
and apparently there's a part of the brain that evolved for religion, which is what Apple exploits by making their stores look like cathedrals, and their staff act like evangelicals.

19 mar 2014 - meeting

had my meeting with the supervisor and i showed him the videos i took, where i climbed trees, went swimming, and other stuff.
he shot down my idea to make conceptual instruction-based art.
he always likes things i don't notice or find embarrassing.
so he saw the videos of the swimming and liked it when you can see people treading water in the shot.
and he liked the video which i was embarrassed to show, but was relevant, because it showed what the hand sees when i dress myself.
i know it sounds weird but yeah. he's a Greek who did his undergrad and PhD in Sorbonne. he knows his stuff, so i have to take his advice.
it's just that i didn't realise how difficult it will be to plan and execute my practical project until he told me.
it's no wonder this final semester only has 2 units, one for academic writing and one for practical project development i.e. these supervisor meetings.

so i decided that i better quit the sushi factory job but when i tried to tell the boss, he just said that i can reduce my work hours. so now i will just work there once a week.

then i was stoning at the Curtin bus station when the guy beside said in Mandarin, "are you Chinese?"
i'm like, no... he was probably 30, with Cyprus-guy features, wore a white polo tucked into his khakis. there were a lot of silence, then i got up to go to the library when he said, "can i get you some tea?" except that i didn't understand his mysterious accent. but anyway he seemed decent and cultured so we had coffee at the library.
he's an Aussie engineer from the Middle East, loves tea and is interested in learning Mandarin and Japanese. we talked about my project, Chinese culture and he was as decent and cultured as he seemed, so that was nice.

then i worked on my project for a bit at the library and went home and couldn't sleep until 2am because of the caffeine.

17 mar 2014 - draft dissertation

today another classmate and i presented our draft dissertations to the class for feedback.

i have been working on my draft since the first session of dissertation workshopping last week, because i saw how my classmate became disheartened by the constructive criticism.
didn't want to told that it didn't make sense or that it had major issues.

the thing is that since my last supervisor meeting, i was able to find a new angle for my research question, and kinda rewrote stuff in order to make it more relevant to my topic.
this new angle was much clearer and more focused than the draft i submitted last semester.
but i only figured it out last week so i didn't have much time to build up the draft.

so when i wasn't procrasinating (been watching a lot of the Craig Ferguson), i was doing the literature review and background. last night i worked on the methodology and some chapters until 1.30am. i didn't submit the draft to the tutor for printing until 10am today.

btw, our new tutor is very smart, non-judgement (unlike the previous one), and kind. she also replaced the old coordinator Ray Berry, and is super helpful in giving our proper rubrics and deadlines. during our first class, she said my topic was very broad and difficult. people often tell me that. but since i found the new angle, i was able to tell people about my project in simple terms, which is a sign of a decent research topic.

i introduced my topic and showed the class 2 videos i made that weekend - one where i spider-manned around a large geometric sculpture and another where i was taking down my laundry, both with the camera on my hand/arm.
then the class read over my draft for 30 minutes and gave me feedback.

i was surprised by the feedback because they said it was good. not one, but many of them said it. "intimidatingly good" was one. wow. no one said that about my writing before because my argument was always fuzzy.
and my tutor said stuff about yeah... my writing was elegant... and it was fascinating how the eye and the hand are so important and stuff...
the funny part was how they suggested i can do experiments where i actually see through the camera on my hand. this was exactly what i proposed to do for my project one year ago. but i scrapped it because it was too dangerous to go walking around with a head-mounted display. so this is what they meant by going 360....

anyway, i was pleased that my draft made sense, even with my simple writing, and that i was going in the right direction.
but i have work on finding key practitioners in the field, to unpack some ideas more carefully, to figure out how to link action to sight, to explain why it's good to have multiple points of view, arrange it so the background has more stuff about the history of the camera, with a bit about cinema, define knowledge, and discuss how others used sight to undermine ocularcentrism.

16 mar 2014 - gopro underwater

that's me laughing there somewhere.

yesterday i took my Go Pro camera, Patrick, to the swimming pool at Riverton.

$5.10 per entry!

little Patrick did well underwater.

i took some photos of us for fun, and lots of videos, to see how the hand's point of view would be like while swimming.

unfortunately for my friend, she couldn't get her eyes open for any of the underwater shots.

there was a 2.4 m deep diving pool. i had to dive for my project.
it was crazy. the last time i tried to jump into a pool of water, i landed on my belly. painful!
this time, i tried to get pointers from my friend and 2 strangers. one of the strangers could do a magnificent jump and dive. the other was teaching his daughters how to dive.
my friend was used to playing in the water.

what i learnt:
  1. put toes over the edge of surface
  2. touch your toes
  3. put arms out, facing the water, with elbows at your ears
  4. tuck chin in
  5. a basic one would be to just fall in hands first
  6. a higher one would be to aim for center of pool, bend your knees and jump in.

my first try (just falling in) was okay. the water hit my thighs and that was not bad.
but i become more self-conscious as i asked people for more tips.
at one point, i almost did a belly flop.
but i think i almost got the hang of letting go of my fears... my instinct to stay alive was stopping me from letting myself go in arms and head first.
it would be great if i could shoot in with a jump and have my legs be straight instead of bent.

after swimming we had Asian food. my Penang Assam Laksa was hell spicy but the noodles were springy.
the teh tarik had no sugar in it so we had to ask for it.

15 mar 2014 - cancellation

hmmm, it's sad, my grandma said she will listen to the advice of my uncles and aunts and not go to London with me.

it's sad because she was very happy and excited to go at the beginning.
i spoke to her after the first time my uncle warned her not to go, but she was like, "i'm going to ignore him, because your brother said that London was safe for him."
i think he told her that it was a dangerous place, and i was able to say that it's a touristy place, so it's not dangerous.

the next time was after lunch with the extended family.
my relatives told her that she was too old, the flight was too long, we weren't going with a tour group, the hospitals make you wait for very long, i wouldn't be able to handle it if anything happened to her.
so she said she didn't want to go anymore, which was upsetting, because i know she did.
but i couldn't refute those points since all i can say was that i will make the holiday very relaxed and it's very unlikely that anything will happen to make her go to hospital.

so yeah, she decided not to worry them. just play it safe and not travel to distant destinations like Europe.
instead, my mom will take her place.
lol - i'm already travelling to Sweden and Japan with her this year.

then i called Emirates today just to confirm that the name can't be changed, and i can't get a refund, but my grandma will have credit if she travels with them by 5 Aug 2014.

now my mom has to buy a plane ticket and a Eurostar ticket.

14 mar 2014 - procastination

i mean these pineapple print shorts. source
some stuff from work today.

1.
there was one guy in a classroom by himself, playing music on his laptop.
i asked if that music was by Disclosure, he replied that it was from the Great Gatsby movie. and then he offered that he could pass it to me. so i met him later with my usb drive, and we chatted for half an hour.
he was a Singaporean, studying Chemical Engineering. apparently there isn't that much of a demand for them anymore. and starting pay for them in Perth was $5000, compared to $3500 in Singapore.
and he worked as a zookeeper for the tigers and what not in Singapore Zoo.
in Perth, he's working with brain damaged ex-convicts (brain damaged in the sense that they know they can work all the ordinary daily tasks, and they have the physical capability to, but they just can't do it that easily and it frustrates them).

2.
asked the photography technician if i could borrow a tripod for my camera even though i'm not taking any photography units. he said i could.
and he said a full frame Canon camera body was $1600. the lens was $800. a high end model would be about $4000. wow.

3.
caught my photography lecturer from last semester as she was going to her class.
it was nice that she remembered me. i wanted to ask how her father was, but didn't.
she said she wanted to see the photos i will take for my project, and that i can drop her an email if i need to talk about it.

4.
saw the tutor we had for last semester's dissertation writing class.
he was teaching art theory. i said i wanted to stay and listen but he said i better get on with my dissertation.

5.
colleague coming in for the evening shift was quite hyper. he was going for the Beach Bash party at uni tonight and showed off a hilariously hideous Hawaiian print shirt. he also immediately introduced himself to a female colleague who had pink hair. she said she was at the Toga party at uni last time and he was like, why didn't i see you there, with your pink hair. she was like, haha yeah and drunk people were calling me Katy Perry. he took a liking to that and said, "bye Katy Perry" three times when she left.

6.
randomly met my classmate from the 3D design class last semester in a library room. she's from China and was surprised that i don't have a boyfriend at my ripe old age. i say that because another guy from China was also concerned that i didn't have a partner at this age. she said it's probably because i don't go out much and am quite quiet.
yeah i guess so.
but that reminded of the guy i met yesterday. i met him a few times before in the flat below. so i saw him in a classroom alone and he started talking about wanting a wife and having a big bed and asking if i want to be his girlfriend/wife. wtf. i think he was joking. but he did kiss my hand. argh.

7.
a tall slim blond person dressed as a chic rock chick came to ask me where the nearest female toilet was. but her voice was quite male. but she was pretty. i told her and she thanked me. i was happy to help.
it was quite funny because i too had trouble finding toilets in that warren of a building. in that badly designed building, certain rooms, such as classrooms and toilets, could only be accessed by certain isolated staircases.
and i had also directed someone to that same toilet earlier in the morning.

8.
i saw a girl rocking a cool look and was reminded of what my uncle commented before on fashion - confidence.
but her look was so well coordinated as well! teal lacy hair ribbon, translucent purple glasses, white tank top, shiny silver back pack, fuzzy (mohair?) teal knee length skirt, purplish platform sandals.
it was eye candy to behold.
and i also saw the girl in the pineapple-print mini-shorts with white pom-pom trimmings (see above) and white chunky sandals again today.

13 mar 2014 - no black out

just an update at 10.04pm -

there still no power outage yet...
i didn't get pizza;
i didn't go to the library;
people are playing guitar at the common room;
the weather is nice and cool;
i am very sleepy.

work today was hectic :(
was very busy in the morning, so i was happy to eat fries with my colleague at 9.50am.
but i was too complacent. enjoyed the chat very much, and didn't notice the missed call or sms until 11.15.
then i realised there was a sms for us to go to help a classroom with AV set up at 10.50am. the sms was received at 10.16am.
because all the service requests so far came through the 2 way, i didn't expect one to come by sms. and worst, i didn't bother to check my phone.
by the time i got to the classroom, the lecturer was a bit fed up that no one attended to his request until 11.20am. it was very awkward trying to apologise and in the end still not be able to fix his problem.
sigh. i feel bad because i didn't see the sms when i was having fun. but then again, the service desk is not supposed to send requests by sms like that.

but in other news, i got some good ideas from colleagues when i told them about my practical project.

like this artist who installed a camera at the back of his head. omg.

13 march 2014 - black out in 30 min?

wow.

12 mar 2014 - supervisor meeting

met my project supervisor today and realised i have A LOT of work to do.
urgh.
have been busy with the theory side of things and ended up neglecting the practical side.
he gave me this list of things to do.
if you read it, you can sorta figure out what my project is about.
the problem is, i have no idea how i am going to do it.
  • ウワァァ-----。゚(゚´Д`゚)゚。-----ン!!!!

12 mar 2014 - wed nesday

there will be power outage from 8pm to 4am tomorrow.
if tomorrow is going to be as hot as today, it will be impossible to sleep without the fan on.
i will aim for the pizza and study in library. maybe even sleep there until 2am. lol.

and i cooked myself some angus porterhouse steak, with the help of the useful instructions on the packet.
with 40% discount, it was about $6.
enjoyed it! perfect thickness for pan fry and it was very easy to prepare.

video art - Guy Sherwin

Guy Sherwin 'Man With Mirror'

10:14

was doing research into film/video and found this. Guy Sherwin is an artist who works with video.

wish i thought of this for my project because it's relatively simple and easy to do, but really interesting and thought-provoking.

it's confusing at first, but makes sense after you know that it's an interplay between a video of man with mirror, and projection of image onto man with mirror.

other things i discovered:
Marcel Duchamp made a film in 1926!
Doll Face - a sufficiently creepy and blunt film about trying to match up to idealized versions of beauty.
Craig Ferguson knows a lot of stuff. and Stephen Fry is brilliant, but that's already well established.

this soup contains two kinds of balls.

i bought a soup packet from the Turkish supermarket.
it contains two kinds of balls!
they provide 8 balls with two flavours in each plate.
how thoughtful.

lol.

and the cashier said i owed him $900 for 3 packets of soup. haha. fun times.

new blog template - white concentrated

picture not really related to post other than it being about attractive designs. // but i saw some kittens gamboling in the bushes while walking to work yesterday, so i stopped and stared and suddenly realised that i was standing in front of a family sitting on their front porch. how embarrassing.

i'm using a new template called Putih Pekat by Iksandi.

i think it's gorgeous and love the slideshow of pictures on the top. also like the way it showcases the first image by magnifying it.

but it's a bit annoying that you have to click the header text or image in order to read the post.
that's regulated by some complex javascript and Iksandi commented that it's too much to change.
and the link to "older posts" and "home" are a bit hard to spot - they are the little icons near the bottom of the page.

there's another template called Sight that looks quite nice too.

9 mar 2014 - common room

Guild House had an event today - i showed up after i came home from work.
there was a koala, dingo and a least 3 snakes.
touched the koala but couldn't get a picture for all the people crowding around it. it was just in the tree eating leaves with its back towards us and ignored everything.
it had big black claws.
i petted some snakes and had one placed on my shoulders unexpectedly. they were just throwing snakes on us. lol.
it felt warm because the weather was cold, and i thought it was really quite cute and gentle.
i would like a snake for a pet actually.

we played people bingo and i didn't bothered to fill up mine.
Mr Masters, the guy went back to Africa during the holidays to find a wife. i asked if he did and he said he got married for real!
and my flatmate's Brazilian friend - handsome guy with a wee curly moustache - told us how to distinguish Brazilian guys from the crowd. they wear Brazilian football jerseys and Brazilian sandals. lol.

waited for the food - the guys were bbq-ing crocodile and kangaroo for us to try.
the white chunk was croc and the black lump was roo.
the roo tasted better than the burger i had. it was like lean beef.
and the croc was like dense chicken breast. not bad.

in other news, Major Lazer makes some amazing music.

8 mar 2014 - venue support

just completed the first week of school + work at school.

my only class for the week was on Monday.
most of my old classmates were there, what a relief.
it was a new tutor who was going to help us with dissertation writing.
i'm presenting my draft in 2 weeks.
apparently some of my classmates didn't touch theirs during the holiday - good to know we're in the same boat.

got to know that the dissertation is due on 12 May. omg - that made me go in panic mode. i was quite depressed for the rest of the day.
i reviewed my draft from last semester with the comments from the marker.
and found a useful book called Movement as Meaning : In Experimental Film by Daniel Barnett, so i've been reading that and making notes.
planning to write 1000 words of draft for my movement chapter today. haha, not sure how that will go.

something that was interesting from the book - "a meme is idea that has power to replicate".
the mobile phone is one such meme.
when it got invented, the idea of being able to make phone calls from anywhere became so powerful that it is now an integral part of modern life. how cool is that.
we benefit from so many ideas worth spreading.

and work at school was alright.
i have 6 shifts and it's all different people. and they are all young, fun, confident... it's good to learn from them.
i've gotten better at meeting people and communicating - over the walkie-talkie as well.
i'm also hesitating and deliberating over things less - when i need to check a place, just open the door and go for it, instead of hovering outside like a ghost. still not adept at interrupting lecturers though.

now i'm going to watch Billy Connolly's travel documentary on Route 66. :D
the introduction alone has got me sold on how fun he was going to make this journey. and also the historical and cultural impact of this road in America.

6 mar 2014 - paris and london - 5 - 18 aug

heh heh heh

feeling quite pleased with myself because i finalized the accommodation for the London trip my grandma wanted.
all booked on Airbnb. had to find places with elevator access/on the ground floor.

piggy bank is broken now, but it's okay.

these are for 2 persons (incl. security deposits):

flight via Emirates to Paris, return - S$1876

Eurostar from Paris to London, return - GBP142

3 nights in Paris, 3rd arr. - A$316

8 nights in London, Camberwell - A$1095

1 night in Paris, 10th arr. - A$159
we're going to London via Paris because even with the Eurostar, it's still cheaper than flying to the cheaper London airport. the airline states that minimum stay at the flight destination is 3 days, which is fine with me. haha.
should be fun on the train - it just takes about 2 hours of travel time, goes between Gare du Nord and St. Pancras and includes 2 x 85 cm luggage space.

not sure how traveling with grandma will be since she is not into the same stuff as i am, and we certainly can't do much walking. but i'm going to take her to eat good food and we can rest at nice cafes.

old legends

Billy Connolly - Scottish comedian

Michael Caine on Parkinson's last show
and

freaking inspiring and hilarious! XD

2 mar 2014 - future music festival

went to the Future Music Festival at Joondalup.
it was pretty damn good time, in retrospect. haha.

this was the set list. for some reason they list the acts in reverse chronological order.
i decided that 12 noon was too early to go and tried to make it there by 3pm to see Naughty Boy.
the train from Perth to Joondalup was unusually packed with crazy young people singing at the top of their lungs and sitting on each other.

this is the entrance to the venue.

i arrived late and only caught their last song - La La La. i only knew that one song anyway, so it was good.

the annoying thing about the venue was that the 2 main stages were maybe 1 km apart.
i walked back and forth just to get a sense of the place. the main stages were built in grassy hollows separated by a long white building in the middle. lots of food and drink stalls, with portaloos.

i hung around for Tinie Tempah - i liked his music since his first hit single, so that was really fun.
he was bouncing all over with his crew and he said he liked our energy. :D

the next highlight was Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. not surprisingly, there was a huge turn out for that.
when i first arrived, i stood behind some annoying French people who whistled loudly at random and seemed to dislike being there.
so i moved in and tried to find a spot where people weren't asses.
it was quite difficult, since many were not interested in the music and just taking photos of themselves, or they were provoking people by making them fall off dustbins, or smoking, or squeezing past me to get in/out. that was the most annoying. this was the case with all the performances.

Macklemore is strangely handsome even though his features are a little too much.
he was proud that Australia supported gay marriage and did a little speech before Same Love.
and he had dancers and amusing video introductions to his strange alter egos.
he also jumped into the crowd and body surfed for a bit. crazy guy.
he said he liked our energy too. :D

then i went for Rudimental  - the audience was not that into them and it wasn't packed. but they had good tunes. i think the main guy was drunk. lol. he was eskimo-kissing the audience. but still highly functional. the vocalists were pretty cool.

this was from the Deadmau5 stage. meh. interesting video displays but the music wasn't anything i liked.
for dinner and rehydration, i had to buy a $9.50 fish wrap and a $5 slushie. and i had to use the portaloo twice. although they were gross, they didn't smell. what sorcery was that?

after that, i went for Knife Party and Chase & Status. their sets were at the huge tented area with some cool laser light displays.
my god, that was awesome. especially Chase & Status! their music was all killer no filler. :DDD

1 mar 2014 - failed picnic

joined the gang - they planned to see the sunset while picnicing at the Canning Regional Park.

2 of the members hooked up recently, so the guy was eager to impress the girl with fried chicken and her favorite cheesy sausages.
it was funny how it happened because the girl didn't fit what he was looking for and they were friends for a long time. seems like it happened when he was always at her house where she was helping him to pass his English test.

it was a hot day and we went to the park at 6pm. there was fried noodle, chicken, snacks, sausages and hamburgers for grilling. and some dessert wine.
forgot about the mat and all the pavillions were taken up so we sat on this grass.
okay, but the ants quickly crawled onto us and starting biting us. not fun.
by the time the BBQ pit was free, it was night fall and the mosquitoes came out to play. it was awful - we were jumping and screaming and cursing.
so we quickly packed up and left immediately after grilling a batch of sausages.
the mosquitoes had won.

28 feb 2014 - kindness

after work at the factory, the helpful and friendly colleague was asking people to join her for beers. the guys were like, "pick me up!" and she was like, "i'm not your chauffeur!" but she agreed to anyway.
i didn't join them but she offered to send me home. i was like, "don't bother yourself, just the bus stop is fine," but she insisted and even went with me to the shopping center.
she was like, "i used to be quiet like you, you don't believe me?" and she told me about her cute German boyfriend and gave more advice about work.
her generosity reminds me of the Taiwanese friends i made in Korea.

we had this at the shopping center - a newly opened Taiwanese/HK dessert and fast food joint called Dessert Story.
i had the green tea ice cream in cream and sago and mango ($7.90). so good.

the next day i had their value meal ($9.90). pretty damn good too.
