Kalgoorlie, 14 april 2013 - super pit

 day 2 in Kalgoorlie.

left hostel at 9am to walk to the Super Pit, which was the hill site of rich gold deposits, dug out into a pit that can be seen from space, to extract all the gold. and they're still digging.
took some detours, but we reached only at 11.14am!
it was a very long walk.

this was part of the detour. we walked up the historic main street of the town called Boulder.
Boulder was very prosperous during the peak of the gold mining period in the 1900s.
most of the nice buildings are dated from that time.
that's the town hall, i think.
but now it's mostly deserted.
we found the one shop of interest in the strip - a sweet shop! :D
 imported candies.

the nice young lady behind the counter gave us chocolate rocks as sample. tasty.
a small bag of it cost $5.
we got ice cream instead. this is a single scoop ($4), which is actually 2 scoops! awesome XD
mine was Old English Toffee.
desert roads with the Super Pit in the distance. our New Zealand taxi driver said this used to be towns, but now it's empty.
climbing up the hill to get to the Super Pit. very tiring.
that's the biggest gold open pit mine in Australia. with color distortion.
Ewan took a photo at the yellow digger thing. so we did the same thing.
the sheltered look out was very welcome respite from the sun.
with miniaturization effect. love the different colors. it's humongous.
then had to rush down to see the museum because we didn't have much time before the train left.
this museum (Western Australian Museum — Kalgoorlie-Boulder) is very lovely.
5 stars for the content and the displays!
the red crane thing is a mining crane with an operating lift that takes visitors to the roof.
the museum staff told us that echidnas (something like porcupines) used to be thigh-high. crazy cute!
the Gold Vault section of the museum. actual gold!
the view from the rooftop. that's the Super Pit in the distance.
 the town below.
oh yes. how could i forget.
the flies in Kalgoorlie are attracted to your face. just your face. super annoying and gross.
from the moment we reached the town, we were harassed by flies landing on our lips and specs.
face-eating buggers!
then it was time to go home. sunset from the train.
