19 jan 2014 - art stage singapore

* overdue post for 19 Jan - there are 21 images here *

i went to the Art Stage exhibition after a really good buffet lunch with the extended family at Riverfront Furama. and by really good, i mean extensive spread, quality food, decent sushi, and not that expensive ($35 each?). at times like these, Singapore kicks ass.

Art Stage was at Marina Bay Sands and i got a discounted student ticket because i am a student haha.
and it was brilliant. again, extensive collection from the usual Asian suspects, and quality cool stuff all around.

Thai military uniforms embroided with faces of politicians.

it was quite crowded and made for interesting people-viewing, because of the hipsters and artsy types.

heh. rotund. and so cute. such overwhelming abundance and happiness.

eau de protest.

mirror image. monotony, routine and tedium.
the one-way glass lets the viewers see the reflections of the work, but not of themselves, so it's not distracting.

 many paintings.

i liked these. kinda relevant to my project because they are individual images layered to produce something that's more than the sum of its parts.
also is a fun DIY home decorating idea!

this one is fun. shiny pink giant flying pig that inflates and deflates slightly so it looks like it's flapping its wings.
drew some a crowd! the French guy at the booth was quite handsome too.

this is from Australia. the bricks all have a random message and the neon signs are activated by the presence of visitors.
a statement of human communication.

Samuel Quinteros' beautiful paintings influenced by ukiyo-e and alternative Japanese culture.

then i joined a guided tour for the Korean, Japanese and Indian curated platforms.
this was from the Korean section.
another good DIY decorating idea!
the story behind the piece was that the artist was sick of the bad news on newspapers, so she painted brightly colored spots on them as a way of changing fortunes and bringing good luck.
the humans taking photos in the picture are not part of the artwork.

this was our tour guide - a French lady. very informative! here she is explaining the references in the surrealist painting by an Indian artist.
i knew her top was from Issey Miyake! i did a report on his Pleats Please collection last semester, so i recognised the unique structure of her top. not bad, Mr Miyake. when i have money, i want to invest in statement clothes too.

oh yeah, she introduced one piece where the artist (Nobuhiro Nakanishi) took successive photos of a sun rise/set, printed them on huge sheets of celluloid and hung them in a curving S shape from the ceiling. the idea was that your movement along the piece allows you to create a movie of the sun rising or setting.
very relevant to my project.

Tokyo advert signboards in a glass ball.

 political commentary - Singapore edition.
"With you in charge, I am at ease."
neat square tiles covering but not quite able to control the messy fluff strands.

 various interesting sculptures.

little house-headed robots paddling a skateboard.
awww.

this was cool. the teacher was one of the many sculptures made in a biased perspective.
people were intrigued by these tricks of the eye.

realistic painting of twigs and Mario characters.
photograph of man in red door camouflage.

 sticker art! i enjoyed these.

 and giant paper disks.
